2020 YOUTH PROJECTS
Project Namearman’s new home. Short Film by Jordan Fiddler
|
Project DescriptionA short film based on a teen alien character going to school in northern Ontario (sioux lookout). This character suffers from great loss, and is grieving his destroyed home planet. The alien was sent as a toddler to Earth so their alien species can survive, alongside a number of other aliens. There are "alien hunters" who are convinced that aliens have infiltrated their smalltown, and will stop at nothing to try and find them. It will show my own struggles as an LGBT teen, but in a way where everyone can relate to the film.

Aunties on the Road Indigenous Full Spectrum Doula Training
|
Our project aims to offer a series of workshops to Indigenous youth in the Ottawa area on topics related to sexual and reproductive health. By offering culture based workshops, led by Indigenous youth facilitators, we aim to destigmatize conversations around sexual and reproductive health, strengthening the relationships Indigenous youth have with their bodies and their cultural identities. Proposed workshop topics include pelvic floor health, foods and herbs to promote lactation, comfort measures for labour and delivery and making a cradleboard and mossbag. Workshops will be offered on a weekly basis during July and August and will be facilitated by Indigenous doulas from the Aunties on the Road: Full Spectrum Doula Collective.

Nimkii Youth Collective
|
Nimkii Youth Collective was founded in 2019 and has been operating in our traditional territory at year round culture camp, Nimkii Aazhibikong. We have three members, two youth and one fluent elder. We work to reclaim our language and knowledge on the land of our ancestors.
Currently, we are focusing on food sovereignty, traditional harvesting and growing practices and wish to purchase supplies needed for preserving the food for the winter. We also hope to harvest natural fibres, medicines and dyes and need some specific tools in order to do so. We will be documenting our practices and posting it on our social media as well as documenting the Anishinaabemowin associated with each task. |

The program will implement Anishinaabe aadziwin and gikendaswin cultural and land based learning by having the youth learn how to make traditional Anishinaabek snowshoes. There will be a focus to engage youth in community and strengthen their cultural connections with the land.

Artistic Conscious Empire
|
The goal is to take a team of multi-disciplinary creatives of Toronto and curate arts showcases, creative workshops, and discussions that inspire a powerful upward creative energy over the span of 6 month period. We want to bridge the gap and level the playing field from disadvantaged marginalized and underserved indigenous youth specifically who are looking to gain exposure and network with creatives alike by creating and giving them facility and platform to help them find success and do it on their own terms. Through the actions of our collective we wish to demonstrate how alternative approaches can bring meaningful outcomes for creators, their audiences, and the cultures that exist around them.

Values and Vision
|
Through an artistic approach the Values and Vision workshop aims to help Indigenous youth navigate the fundamentals of developing their own personal values so they can envision a balanced life for themselves. This workshop will provide ten youth aged 14-21 with the opportunity to learn how values are an important life asset that guides your behaviors, decisions and actions. This workshop is segregated into 3 sections, totaling 8 hours to complete. Section I we will have discussions based off what values are, learn how they are applied to our everyday lives and why its important to have your own personal set. In section II we will break out into brain storming sessions and all work to create our own set of values, youth will have the opportunity to work with each other, the facilitators, or amongst themselves during this period to create their individualized sets. Section III will be led by the artists who will provide a teaching on how to work with certain elements of visual art (i.e. Painting, drawing, etc.) then we will conduct an art session where a two-sided canvas is created. One side would have the individual’s art piece we created in section III while the other side would have their personal values written out from section II. The purpose of this workshop is to get youth thinking about how important values are in guiding your life path to build healthy relationships with other people and yourself. The visual portion provides a taken home piece to reinforce these values when needed.

Pijitsirniq Qanuqtuurniq
|
My vision for the project Pijitsirniq Qanuqtuurniq (Pijitsirniq means serving and providing for community and Qanuqtuurniq means being innovative and resourceful) is to reach out to the Inuit community living in Ottawa which has the largest Inuit population outside of Inuit Nunangat (Inuit lands) and offer grocery delivery through an app called Instacart that offers grocery pick up and drop off right to your door.

Dream Catchers Journey
|
Sound Syndrome Music Group, JermaineHenry.CA and Young Leader’s Circle collaborate to host a Dream Catchers Hip Hop show in Toronto, Ontario, at Children’s Peace Theatre. Sound Syndrome Music Group members will travel from Baawaating to Tkaronto.
Alternatively, with the recent covid19 pandemic conditions. We propose to host the Dream Catchers Hip Hop show to be held on Zoom and advertised to TKaronto and Baawaating circles. With the goal of expanding the Sound Syndrome brand to Southern Ontario as well, and provide reduced isolation in the best way we can in this new journey together. Learning how to use online platforms, technology and tools as musicians and create a platform for others who might not have the opportunity. |

Giiwitaabatoo
|
The initiative will be called "Giiwitaabatoo" (he/she runs in a circle) which will be a virtual track club for youth ages 14-29. Our original plan has changed since the outbreak of COVID 19. Self-isolation policies due to the coronavirus have caused the cancellation of many events that involve large groups of people. That, of course, includes Spring/Summer track meets and road races. Originally, this project was to be a three-fold track club initiative that focuses on removing barriers to compete, supporting Indigenous athletes who want to train/compete, and training Indigenous coaches to attain the coaching standards set out by Athletics Canada. We can still meet the aims of our original plan with a few modifications. We will do virtual coaching through Zoom and track youth fitness progress through the use of GPS watches, and the running app, Strava.

Working Thru Anti-Blackness Together
|
I will be organizing gatherings for Fall/Winter of 2020 in ottawa featuring panels, talks, facilitators, and breakouts groups for discussion. These events could be as part of a series or individual. The events will be settings to do community work with the following topics: working through anti-Black racism in non-Black people of colour’s spaces, and navigating queer identities. With the capacity to compensate contributors properly, this work will be made possible. The events should have beautiful accessible appropriate venues. To create a more welcoming environment, there will be refreshments and snacks/meals available, keeping in mind food restrictions and allergies.
