The Circle United EmPowWower Youth Art Collaboration Oherokon Youth Rites of Passage TEN Music Program - Truth Empowering Nation Naadmaagit Ki - Language on the Land |
Providing opportunities for our local youth and young families to learn and participate in the various ceremonies and activities of our traditional Cree Rites of Passage.
The Circle United is a weekly group for Indigenous youth. We connect around creative activities and cultural teachings to make connections and learn more about our indigenous culture and practices. My goal is to empower and encourage our first nations youth through the practices of our tradition which includes PowWow, ceremony and protocol. Through the work of our youth, they will initially be engaged in creating new pieces to add to their new powwow regalia. This is a great self esteem builder as the youth get engaged in this project to uplift their spirit through the hard work and dedication that comes with regalia making. Regalia making includes beadwork, quillwork, and working with sewing machines. The project is to create activities for youth that may be having a disadvantage in life. The activities include art workshops, creating an mural led by the youth. Ohero:kon Youth Rites of Passage at Six Nations is community based project aimed at supporting Haudenosaunee youth transition from adolescence to adulthood. Through a series of teachings and hands on practical skill development, Ohero:kon provides youth with the knowledge and skills to be successful in Haudenosaunee society. Youth are give an awareness and appreciation for cultural knowledge and ceremonies as well as youth roles and responsibilities are taught. The T.E.N Music Program is geared towards assisting youth who are at-risk; providing teachings on various topics that they struggle with such as anger, abuse, bullying, drugs, alcohol, addictions, suicide etc. while giving them outlets of self-expression; releasing negative thoughts, emotions, and energy in a positive way. This program is about hip-hop as well as traditional music, helping the youth to reconnect to their culture and grassroots. This is a pilot project that will start in London, ON working with the youth from the surrounding First Nations; and then reaching out to other at-risk youth in other First Nations. This project focuses on returning Indigenous languages and language learning to the land amongst communtity and all our relations. We would like to host eight Indigenous (Anishinaabe and Haudenosaunee) Language events in a community built teaching lodge on the land. Our name "Naadmaagit Ki" means "Helping the Earth" in the Anishinaabe language. We focus on the popular restorative use of urban lands based on Indigenous principles, knowledge and practices. We support healing of the land and communities, enhanced food security, and education and employment for urban indigenous people and neighbours. |
